Utilitarianism
One of the more popular and easy to understand ethical theories you will study on this course. Enjoy supplementing your revision with the resources below, but a word of warning; whilst utilitarianism is easy to understand, there are hidden depths to the theory. Although initially straightforward, in order to hit the top marks you need to understand the differences between act, rule and preference and how the theory evolved.
Bentham in a Box
Left you can see what appears to be Jeremy Bentham sitting rather grumpily in a glass box. One of my favourite stories about the great philanthropist is that his body still sits grumpily in a glass box in the UCL library foyer, Unfortunately Jeremy had his mummified head stolen by some rogue Kings students who proceeded to play football with it. Poor Jeremy!
